Private Charter Plane -MD90/MD88/MD82

Recently, Delta Airlines purchased 9 Japan Airlines MD90.  Even though the MD90 is not as efficient as the newer 737 Next Gen aircraft, but Delta cited the "significant lower capital cost".  It sounded like Delta is following the same logic practiced by air freight operators - using slightly older aircraft before hitting "significant higher maintenance cost", "at near end of airframe life cycle".

Why the MD90/MD88 is an ideal aircraft for VIP/charter service?
1. Significant lower capital cost to offset slightly higher fuel cost (MD90 has a more efficient engine design than those found in MD80/MD82)
2. Typically configured VIP / 80 pax has an operating range over 2,400 nm;  It has the range for almost coast to coast (US) operation.
3. Cabin width is adequate to accommodate 2x2 business class seats. Cabin aisle height 80" is adequate (6' 8").
4. Rear entry- build-in air stairs and front door entry - air stairs.
5. Self-push back - using the thrust reverser
6. Long fuselage length, many possible configurations

Political Campaign Plane (Once time use - every 4 years)
1. Long fuselage - lots of real estate for what ever needs to be said/painted.
2. Air stairs in back and the front, VIP and news reporters.
3. Quiet cabins, with added sound abatement treatment, it will be even more quieter for in the "air", on air interview

Sports team (baseball, basketball, hockey teams)
1. Comfortable 2x2 seating @ 52-60" pitch for tall players, still have room for a team of 70 people
2. Quiet cabins for relaxing trip
