End of Year - Food for thoughts

Why is it more expensive to cook at home than cheap take out food?
* breakfast at Big D - small coffee, and a simple sandwich $1.98 plus tax
* lunch at Big D - spicy chicken sandwich, fries and big drink $3.00 plus tax
* dinner at Big D - side salad, mac-double, yogurt and big drink $4.00 plus tax
=====
Less than $10- a day, no need to cook, to wash dishes..

Why is it more expensive to diesel power car than gasoline?
* if "torque" is not a big deal, many gasoline power car is a lot cheaper to operate than VW Jetta.
* Diesel = 3.80/gallon, Gasoline = 3.00
* Diesel = 42 mpg, gasoline needs to get 33 mpg to have same fuel costs
* Diesel engine cost more than gasoline, - so what's the point of driving diesel, if the cost of operating is the main objective

Old network router still runs, but no good
* the network security has improved, the old router doesn't work well with new Windows 7 security setup.
* the a/b isn't as good as the g/n network setup, the effective operating range is a lot shorter.

The costs of owning a car go way beyond the initial acquisition expenses.
One would argue how much money do you really need to spend on transportation, and how much of that translates into real meaningful benefits. A reliable CRV 2WD, LX runs about $20K and a luxury Q5 runs over $40K.

A typical vehicles, or cost of ownership, is composed with the following expenses
1. acquisition cost - (interests, payments)
2. Insurance, title, inspections - Some states assess taxes base on the value of vehicle, where as some states treat them all the same.
3. Operating cost -  fuel, repairs
4. Depreciation - when it comes to trade-in, or upgrades, some vehicle depreciates at an alarming rate in the early years and tapered off over time.  Holding on to cars like these a bit longer may lessen the depreciation  cost, but it also translate into higher repair costs.

For example:
2 CRV LX, and 2 Q5 for 5 years, 75K miles

1 & 4 (net costs)
CRV = $42K new, trade-in $22K, interests = 5K = $25K / 5K a year
Q5 = $86K new, trade-in $32K, interests = 10K = $64K / 13K a year

2 (tax, basis)
The difference is minimal, unless you're in the states where tax, fees are based on the value of vehicles

3 (operation cost)
Fuel costs - premium fuel costs more, but it also relates higher performance engine and lower fuel economy.
CRV = 26 mpg
Q5 = 23 mpg
@ 3.30 gallon/regular fuel, The CRV translates 2200 / 400 a year

Repairs?  It's a very subjective measurement.  Honda has been a reliable brand, German cars tends to have many small mechanical problems and expensive maintenance costs.

The bottom line = if you have $10K extra of disposable income then having finer things in life is for you.

Product life cycle for cars and trucks

In the early 80's, the Japanese car makers followed a typical 4 years cycle.  Now, it's 5 years with a typical 3rd year face-lift. The luxury vehicles have a even longer product life cycle of 6 years.  The product changes are even more subtle than ever.

No more 1986 Ford Taurus like design changes.

The new vehicles were typically introduced in September, but it new models are coming to market through out the year. There is no more "bargain" model -end discount in the summer.

Car chargers for usb devices

I purchased a 12-volt USB charger.  It seems to work ok with iPhone and iPod touch.  But it didn't work with Blackberry phone. What's up?  Isn't USB the same?

USB 2.0 - states 100mA to 500mA - when it is used to transmit data.  The same up to 500mA USB bus port (notebook, desktop) charges iPhone OK, it also charges iPad and some other devices, but not all USB devices. Why?

The standard iPhone USB AC Power "brick"  says
100-240V 50/60Hz 5V 1 A.

The iPad AC power block says
100-240V 50/60Hz 5.1V 2.1A

The Blackberry "power plug" says

100-240V 200mAh 50-60HZ 11-17 VA - Output: 5V-750mAh

Water restriction and soak hoses sales

Why Soak hoses
1. it doesn't make noise
2. it doesn't spray mist, no water over run
3. it actually works

# # # #

Texas encounters serious drought.  The water usage is up due to hot temperature, but it also endangers the drinking water supply for entire city solely on ground water (San Antonio).

The water restriction prohibits use of sprinkler systems.  In order to keep the grass and trees alive, soak hoses are tools used by many to discretely watering plant at night without raising suspicion of inspectors.

Keeping trees and shrubs alive is quite different from keeping grass green.  If I come across a "lively" yard - I can only suspect the owner has been watering, regardless whether using sprinklers, hand held hoses, or soak hoses.

# # # #

How to balance soak hoses?

1. Use Y connector, and regular garden hose as extenders. to balance out the water pressure.

Real MPG, Even used SUV/Pickup Truck Drivers are Rich

Real cost of driving an SUV/Pickup Truck

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/
F-150 v8 4.6L has a real life 16MPG
Accord 2.4L has a real life - 28MPG

A typical F-150 XLT pickup truck runs over $30,000
A typical Accord EX sedan runs about $24,000

Assuming that both vehicles have same residual value, then
over a 180,000 miles lifetime and at an average fuel cost of $3.30 gallon
Ford Truck = fuel 37,125 + truck costs 30,000/tax = 69,000
Honda Car =  fuel 21,215 + car costs 24,000/tax  =   46,700

Assuming that both vehicles have same residual value, then
Even driving a used pickup truck with 100,000 miles/trade in @ 200,000, it is the real kicker

Ford Truck = fuel 20,625 + truck costs 12,000//tax-3,000 trade in =30,400Honda Car =  fuel 11,800 + car costs 24,000/tax - 7,700 trade in =  29,650

 ## # # #

What do you expect for your MPG?

On an average of 18,000 miles a year, a typical SUV will consume 900 gallons a year or more.  A typical bread-n-butter family sedans consume 600 gallons or less.  The difference of $500 10 years ago ($1.75 gallon) was worth the "fun, enjoyment".  At the current rate of $3.50 gallon, or $4.00 gallon, the difference become $1000, $1200 a year. That's $100 a month more on gas.

Getting more than 30 mpgs require some serious trade-off.  Want to give up the size? Want to give up the comforts?

At 40mpg, it saving translates to (18,000/30 - 18,000/40) 150 gallons or $500 a year.  It's kind of same questions, want fun/size for $1000 more or give up some comforts/size to save $500?

Chinquapin & Bur Oak leaves turning yellow

Lack of water!

The 25-30 ft tall oak tress leaves turning yellow in hot Texas heat.  The mature trees should be able to weather out the drought, but it isn't always the case.

The leaves turning yellow quick!  The lush green, become just greenish after 1 months of hot weather and no rain.  The greenish leaves became yellow green in 2 months and start to brown out shortly after that.

Dumping 300-500 hundred gallons of water along the drip lines every other days for a week seems to have saved the trees.

$1 Dollar Coin

I want to have $1 coins, where can I find them?

In a plastic based society, having pocket full of change isn't the way to go.  I don't recall the coins are something that I carry for a long long time.  The coins are to be found in either car cup holders, or the plastic jug I placed nearby entrance door.

The "smart card", the micro-chip embedded cash card didn't take off in America, but it worked well in Europe when it was first introduced in 1990's/early 2000.  I think having a superior communication infrastructure renders the off-line transaction (coins, cash smart card) less important.

 I like to use coins to save our tax payer money, but couple things has to happen first
1. stronger pockets for all. better design of coins holder for purses
2. pricing structure need to match the use of coins  when the basis for everything is near $1.00 mark - water, soda, chip, or lottery tickets.
3. machines accepts dollar coins
4. fewer credit card accepted vending machines. red box accept coins?/not credit cards?

Long Range SUV? Traveling with MDX and Trailer; U-Haul

March 2012 - Trailer Hitch and U-Haul Trailers

Towing - asking a professional truck driver.

1. a balanced trailer - is easier, and safer to drive
2. sliding trailer/shifting weight to the rear axle, also improves fuel efficiency.
3. sliding hitch to a "right" spot/over the drive axle can also improve fuel efficiency

# # # # #

Most trailer for cars, suv and pick up truck don't have these adjustment. The tongue weight - is fixed, can't be slide fwd or aft.  The cargo trailer to rear axle is fixed. Balancing load between tongue, and rear axle have to be done right at the time of loading

# # # # .

U-Haul seems to offer the best value for trailer hitch installation.  Just like any business, the real bottom time, when it is fully equipment with everything. The price can be 50% more than just the trailer equipment itself.

The trailer with tandem wheels seems to offer the better control/balance than single axle trailer.  The draw back is higher gross weight.

1,000-lb, 2,000 lb, 3,500 lbs, 5,000 lbs seems to be common trailer rating for vehicles.  Just like most aircraft carrying freight,  it's likely that typical load fills up the available space/volume before reaching the maximum gross weight.  So, what does it mean?

It's very likely that a vehicle with a recommended maximum trailer with of 3,500 can actually pull a trailer with a higher maximum gross weight rating.

# # # #
For example:  6' x 12' cargo trailer
Inside dimensions: 11'7" x 6' x 5'5" (LxWxH)
Door opening: 5'0" x 4'10" (WxH)

Volume: up to 396 cu. ft.
Max load: 2,480 lbs.
Gross vehicle weight: 4,400 lbs. max.
Empty weight: 1,920 lbs.

# #  # # #

Acura MDX/Pilot = 3,500 maximum  (4,500 with aerodynamic boat trailer)
Trailer empty weight, 1,900 lbs = 1,600 lbs.

# # # #

1,600 lbs over 12x6 sq ft = 22 lbs/sq ft

boxes clothing = (2ft x 3 boxes) x 2ft wide x 3 ft @ 40 lbs = 150 lbs
couch = 7 ft x 3 ft  (3ft tall)  @ 150 lb
queen size beds set = 7 ft x 3 ft  (5 ft tall, width)  @ 200 lbs

standard boxes = 12x 12x 18
standard boxes 5 rows (5x 1 ft), 2 columns (2 x 1.5ft) x (4 x 1 ft) =40 boxes
40 boxes @ 20 lbs = 800 lbs
Up right piano = 5 ft x 2.5 ft (4 ft tall) @ 600 lb
========================================
1,900 lbs payload + 1,900 empty = 3,800 lbs

March 2012-  Trailer Sizing for MDX

If a back seat seat back can be replaced/re-foam with an integrated fuel tank, how much additional fuel storage can you get?

Many passenger car offers fold down rear seats, if we don't need it then, use the seat back as fixed fuel storage.

4 feet wide x 1.5 ft wide and 3/4 ft deep.  The extra 6 inches will not take too much of cargo space.  The extra 4.5 cu ft of volume = 7.4 gallon/cu ft = 33 gallon?

33 gallon = 6.8 lb/gallon = 200 pounds of fuel
A total of 50 gallon fuel tanks = 1,500 mile range @ 62 miles/hour avg = 24 hours of continuous travel.

Traveling with 6x10 Trailer
Acura MDX, 2001-2006

(original post)
The magic fuel tank size seems to be 18 plus gallons, regardless of the fuel efficiency.

MDX gets 20 mpg on highway, it has a 18 gallon tank, it translates into 360 miles
Altima gets 33 mpg on highway, and it also has a 18 gallon gas tank, it translates into 600 miles range.

Why can we put a bigger tank, (30 gallon tank) on SUV so that it has the same 600 miles range or more?

MDX has the 3rd row seats that most of us don't really need.  By taking out the bottom seat cushions and seat back, it creates a decent size of cavity for internal fuel tank; 4 ft wide x 2 ft long x 3/4 ft deep.

6 cu ft of space, with a protective top and surrounding structure, there is space left for (6x7.4) = 44 gallons tank supplemental system. With a combined tanks of (44+18) 62 gallons capacity, the MDX is capable of 1,200 cruise range.

How/where to buy and install an auxiliary fuel tank?

Smart Ones Weight Watchers
My take on all the nice frozen foods - review

On average, each package contains 30% of sodium. I can easily take-in 3 boxes in one sitting. or 6-7 boxes a day.  It translates into 200% of suggested daily intake for sodium. Granted, sodium elevates flavors; but I don't think I will miss that much if it is cut down to 20% per box.
