European cars live on diesel because it gets a lot more miles. Diesel powered vehicles cost more than gasoline variety, but at $5-6 or 7-9 bucks a gallon, the added initial vehicle costs can easily offset by the gain in fuel economy.
It doesn't work for me yet. Diesel price just hits $3.40 and regular 87 gasoline stands at $2.89.
Here are few items on my check list.
To cover 100,000 miles with diesel @ 25/49 mpg (Consumer Reports) - Jetta Diesel 6-MT
vs
Same miles a gasoline powered Corolla 5 speed manual transmission @ 23/39 mpg
Diesel City = $13,600 fuel costs
Gas Power = $12,565
-------- It costs more to operate Jetta than gasoline Corolla and Jetta Diesel typically costs $5000 more than heavily discounted Corolla
Diesel Highway = $6,939 fuel costs
Gas Power = $7,410
----- Even though there is fuel saving of 480 over 100,000 miles, but it still isn't worth that $5000 premium.
